Mumbai to Antarctica: Falklands, South Georgia and the Peninsula

This is the most ambitious of our polar routes. It starts in Mumbai and ends on the longest kind of Antarctic voyage: a sailing from Ushuaia that also calls at the Falkland Islands and South Georgia before reaching the Peninsula. Voyages like this are usually far longer than a standard Peninsula cruise, and the flights from India to the tip of Argentina need several connections, so set aside the better part of a month. The itinerary spends two nights in Ushuaia.

The extra islands are the reason to choose this version. The Falklands have a distinctly British feel, with farms, small settlements and seabird colonies along their coasts. South Georgia, far out in the Southern Ocean, is known for its large king penguin colonies, its fur seals and the abandoned whaling stations along its shore. Only after those stops does the ship head south to the ice of the Antarctic Peninsula. Because the voyage covers so much open ocean, sea days are common. Expedition teams usually fill them with talks about wildlife and history.
