Wild Atlantic Way Best season (general guide): May–Sep

This route crosses Ireland from Dublin to the Atlantic coast, following part of the Wild Atlantic Way. It spends eight nights in Ireland. From Los Angeles you'll fly to Dublin.

Start in Dublin's Temple Bar. Trinity College holds the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript. Take a free day for museums or a day trip.

Cross to Galway, a lively city on the west coast. From there, boats go to the Aran Islands, and buses go to the Cliffs of Moher, which rise sharply above the Atlantic.

Head down the coast to Killarney. Killarney National Park has lakes, mountains and Muckross House. The Ring of Kerry is a scenic drive around the Iveragh peninsula, and the Dingle peninsula has quiet roads and beaches.

May to September is the best season, with long days. The weather is changeable, so pack waterproofs.

Pacing: in Dublin, walk or use the trams and buses, and book the Book of Kells exhibition ahead. A hire car is the easiest way to explore the west coast. Remember that Ireland drives on the left, and many country roads are narrow, with stone walls, so allow time.

Ferries to the Aran Islands depend on the weather, so keep that day flexible. At the Cliffs of Moher, stay behind the barriers and on the marked paths, as the edges are unstable.

The Ring of Kerry is busy in summer, and many visitors drive it anticlockwise, following the tour coaches. Starting early helps you avoid the traffic. On the Dingle peninsula, the Slea Head Drive is narrow and winding, with stunning views over the Atlantic.

Traditional music sessions in pubs are a highlight in Galway and Killarney.
