Türkiye classics & balloons Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

This route combines four of Türkiye's best-known sights in ten nights, with two domestic flights to save time. From Lagos, Istanbul is a well-connected hub, so getting there is straightforward.

Istanbul deserves three nights. The Sultanahmet area holds Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, all within walking distance of each other. A public ferry across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy, on the Asian side, is a cheap way to see the city from the water.

Fly to Cappadocia next. The valleys around Göreme are full of rock-cut churches and fairy chimneys. Balloons take off at dawn when the wind allows, and keeping a second morning free gives you another chance if the first flight is cancelled. The Göreme open-air museum has painted churches carved into the rock.

A flight to Denizli brings you to Pamukkale, where white travertine terraces run down the hill below the ruins of Hierapolis. From there, the road heads south to Antalya on the Mediterranean, where the old harbour district of Kaleiçi is a good base for beaches and nearby ancient sites.

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months. UNESCO lists Istanbul's historic areas, Göreme and Hierapolis-Pamukkale as World Heritage sites.

Pacing: book Hagia Sophia and Topkapı early in the day, and visit mosques outside prayer times with shoulders and knees covered. Balloon flights should be booked with a licensed operator, and the domestic flights are quickest if you travel with hand luggage only.

In Istanbul, staying in Sultanahmet keeps the main sights close, while Karaköy and Kadıköy feel more local. In Cappadocia, a cave hotel in Göreme is part of the experience, and the valley walks start just outside the village.
