This route covers Spain's capital, Andalusia and Barcelona in ten nights, using high-speed trains and one flight. From Singapore you'll fly to Madrid, usually with a connection.

In Madrid, the Plaza Mayor is the old heart of the city. The Prado and the Reina Sofía museums hold Spain's great art collections, and Retiro Park is good for a break.

Take the high-speed train to Seville. The cathedral and the Alcázar palace are next to each other, and the Santa Cruz quarter has narrow lanes and small squares. From Seville, travel to Granada. The Albaicín quarter has views of the Alhambra at sunset, and the Alhambra itself needs a timed ticket for the Nasrid Palaces, booked in advance. In Granada, a tapa is generally served free with each drink.

Fly to Barcelona. The Gothic Quarter has medieval streets, and the Sagrada Família is Gaudí's unfinished basilica. Park Güell and the beach make a good last day.

April to June and September to October are the best seasons. July and August are very hot in Andalusia.

Pacing: book the Alhambra's Nasrid Palaces as early as possible, as tickets sell out weeks ahead. Book the Sagrada Família and Park Güell ahead, too. Spanish meal times are late, with dinner often after 9 pm, so plan for a light snack in the early evening.

High-speed trains link Madrid, Seville and Granada, and booking early saves money. In summer, plan indoor sightseeing for the hottest part of the day, and enjoy the evenings when the cities come alive.

Each city has its own food: cocido in Madrid, fried fish in Seville and seafood in Barcelona.
