Italy's three great art cities are linked by fast trains. This route spends eight nights between Rome, Florence and Venice. From Bogotá you'll connect through Madrid or another European hub.

In Rome, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona are a good first walk. The Colosseum and the Forum need a day, and the Vatican Museums another.

Take the train to Florence. The Duomo's dome rises over the city, and the Uffizi holds Renaissance masterpieces. A day trip to Siena or the Chianti hills shows Tuscany's countryside.

Take the train to Venice, via Bologna. Vaporetto line 1 runs along the Grand Canal to St Mark's Square. Explore the back canals and the islands. Venice charges an access fee on certain dates, so check before you go.

April to June and September to October are the best seasons, with milder weather and fewer crowds.

Pacing: book the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Uffizi ahead, since timed tickets sell out in spring and autumn. Early morning slots are the quietest. In Rome, the historic centre is best on foot, with the metro useful for longer hops.

Trains between the three cities are fast and frequent, and stations are central, so there is no need for a car. If you buy fixed-time tickets, validate regional tickets before boarding. In Florence, climbing the Duomo's dome also needs a booking.

In Venice, staying inside the city lets you enjoy the evenings after the day visitors leave. Walk away from the main routes between the Rialto and St Mark's, and the lanes become quiet within a few minutes. Luggage is easier if you pack light, as you'll carry it over bridges with steps.
