Ancient Greece Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

This route links Athens with the sanctuary of Delphi and the monasteries of Meteora. It spends six nights in Greece. From Mumbai you'll connect through the Gulf. In Athens, the Acropolis and its museum need a day, and the National Archaeological Museum holds treasures from across Greece. Drive to Delphi, where the sanctuary of Apollo stands on a mountainside. UNESCO lists it.

Continue north to Kalambaka. The monasteries of Meteora stand on top of huge rock pillars. Each closes one day a week, so check before you go. Dress modestly. Meteora and Delphi are best in spring and autumn rather than midsummer.

Pacing: book Acropolis tickets for an early time slot to avoid the heat and the queues. The National Archaeological Museum is a short metro ride from the centre, and it deserves at least half a day.

A hire car is the easiest way to reach Delphi and Meteora, but buses and trains also run. Delphi's site and museum are best visited early, when it is cooler and the light on the mountain is beautiful. At Meteora, the monasteries keep different opening days, so plan your visit around the ones that are open. Trails link the monasteries, and walking between them gives great views of the rock pillars. Kastraki, a village at the foot of the rocks, has guesthouses with views of the cliffs.

Spring brings wildflowers and green hillsides, and autumn has warm, settled days. Midsummer is very hot, so plan walks early. Greek food is a highlight throughout, from souvlaki in Athens to mountain dishes near Meteora. If you have time, stop in Arachova, a mountain village near Delphi, for lunch with a view over the valley.

Getting there and around: fly into Athens, go on to Delphi overland, go on to Meteora overland, and return overland to Athens for the flight home.
