Arctic Norway aurora Best season (general guide): Late Sep–Mar

Tromsø lies well above the Arctic Circle, and in winter it is one of the most popular places to see the aurora. This route spends three nights there and three in the Lofoten Islands. From Johannesburg you'll connect through Europe and Oslo.

Tromsø's Arctic Cathedral, with its white triangular roof, faces the city across the bridge. Evening aurora tours drive inland to find clear skies, and day trips offer dog sledding or reindeer visits with Sami hosts.

Fly from Tromsø to Leknes, in the Lofoten Islands. Steep mountains rise straight from the sea, and fishing villages such as Reine and Henningsvær have red cabins on stilts. The Hurtigruten coastal ship also links Tromsø with Lofoten.

In winter, daylight is short, but the light is often soft and blue. Photographers walk the coast at midday, and the evening sky is the best time to look for the aurora.

The aurora season runs from late September to March. Snow cover is most reliable from about November, so choose those months for sledding.

Pacing: the Northern Lights are never guaranteed, so plan several nights in each place and keep your evenings free. Guided aurora tours follow the weather forecasts and drive to clear areas, sometimes for hours. Dress warmly, with thermal layers, a hat, gloves and warm boots.

In Lofoten, roads can be icy and snowy, so if you hire a car, make sure it has winter tyres and drive carefully. Daylight is short, especially in December, so plan walks and photo stops around the middle of the day.

Accommodation in Lofoten is limited, so book early, especially for the traditional fishermen's cabins.

Tromsø is a lively university town, and its harbour, cafés and museums make good use of the short winter days. In Lofoten, staying in Reine or Hamnøy puts you close to the most photographed mountains and bays.
