Oman forts & dunes Best season (general guide): Oct–Mar

Safety note: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Oman due to the volatile regional security situation (updated 6 Aug 2026). The US rates Oman Level 3 (reconsider travel; risk of drone and missile attacks) and says do not travel to the Yemen border area (issued 30 Aug 2026). Muscat, Nizwa and Wahiba Sands are far from that border.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Muscat: day one, Mutrah corniche at dusk; day two, Grand Mosque (morning visiting hours) and Mutrah souq; day three, Old Muscat and the coast. Then spend days four and five in Nizwa: day four, travel inland to Nizwa, then the fort; day five, Bahla Fort and a falaj walk. Then spend day six in Wahiba Sands: into the Sharqiya Sands, then sunset from the dunes.

Northern Oman is easy to explore by road: a capital on the sea, an inland oasis town below the mountains and a sand desert to the east. This plan spends three nights in Muscat, two in Nizwa and one in a desert camp. From Almaty you'll connect through a Gulf hub.

Muscat stretches along the coast between rocky hills. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a major attraction for visitors; modest dress is required, and visiting times are limited, so check them before you go. The old harbour at Mutrah has a corniche and a souq that are best visited in the cooler evening.

Nizwa, inland below the mountains, grew up around its oasis and its fort. The fort's great round tower was built in the seventeenth century under Imam Sultan bin Saif. Nearby Bahla Fort and the falaj irrigation channels that feed the date gardens are both on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The Wahiba Sands, also called the Sharqiya Sands, cover about 12,500 square kilometres. Desert camps can arrange dune drives, and the sunset from a high dune is the highlight. Visit Oman recommends October to March, when the weather is cooler.

Good to know: A hire car with a driver or a self-drive 4x4 makes the inland loop simple, but leave the dune driving to the camp's staff, since soft sand needs experience. Carry water and a scarf against wind-blown sand, and leave early on the last day, as the drive back to Muscat for the flight home takes several hours.
