Canyon viewpoints, waterfalls & gold-rush towns Best season (general guide): Apr–Sep

The Panorama Route, in South Africa's Mpumalanga province, runs along the edge of a great escarpment above the lowveld. This route spends three nights in Graskop and two in Pilgrim's Rest. From Almaty you'll connect through Johannesburg to Mpumalanga.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Graskop: day one, drive to Graskop; day two, Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondavels; day three, God's Window and the waterfalls. Then spend days four and five in Pilgrim's Rest: day four, Pilgrim's Rest; day five, hike in the hills.

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, with green, forested slopes. The Three Rondavels, rounded rock peaks, rise above the river.

At Bourke's Luck Potholes, swirling water has carved round holes in the rock.

God's Window is a viewpoint at the edge of the escarpment, and waterfalls such as Lisbon Falls drop off the cliffs nearby.

Pilgrim's Rest is a gold-rush village preserved as a living museum, with old shops and houses.

April to September is the dry season, with clearer views.

Good to know: A car is needed. Mist can hide the views, so plan viewpoints for the clearest mornings.

The Panorama Route viewpoints are close together, so you can see several in a day without long drives. Start early to have the viewpoints to yourself. Graskop is a small town with cafés, a good base between viewpoints. Pilgrim's Rest has small museums and cafés along its main street. Hikes in the hills around it follow old mining paths. Kruger National Park is close to this route, so a game drive can be added. Bring a warm layer, as the escarpment is cool in winter. Fuel up whenever you can, as filling stations are spread out. Waterfalls flow most strongly late in the rainy season.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in South Africa because of serious crime (advisory updated 28 Sep 2026). The US rates South Africa Level 2 (issued 27 May 2025).

Drive in daylight and keep valuables out of sight.
