Highland pine forests & a beach bay Best season (general guide): Jan–Aug

Southern Vietnam's Central Highlands are cool and green, while the coast below has long beaches. This route spends three nights in Da Lat and three in Nha Trang. From Amsterdam you'll connect through Ho Chi Minh City or another hub to Da Lat.

Da Lat was a hill resort in the French colonial era, and villas, pine forests and lakes still give it a different feel from the rest of the country. Xuan Huong Lake is at the centre of town.

The Crazy House is a strange guesthouse shaped like a tree, open to visitors. The old railway station is a fine colonial building.

Around Da Lat are waterfalls, flower farms and coffee plantations.

A mountain road winds down to Nha Trang, a city on a long beach bay. The Po Nagar towers, built by the Cham, stand on a hill near the river mouth.

Boats visit the islands of the bay, where Hon Mun is a marine protected area used for snorkelling and diving.

January to August avoids the main rainy season on this coast.

Da Lat is cool enough for long walks around the lake and through the pine hills. Its market is busy in the evening with street food stalls and warm soy milk. Coffee farms around the town sell beans grown in the highlands. In Nha Trang, the beach is long and the promenade is good for a walk at sunrise. Book island boat trips with operators that limit group size and keep reef rules. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to use in both towns. Leave a free morning in Nha Trang for the beach before the long journey home.

Good to know: The drive from Da Lat to Nha Trang is a few hours by road. Bring a jacket for Da Lat's cool evenings.
