Auckland to Wyoming: Jackson and Grand Teton
Auckland → Jackson → Grand Teton
Sawtooth peaks & a western town Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep
The Teton Range rises abruptly from Jackson Hole, a high valley in north-west Wyoming. This route spends three nights in the town of Jackson and three inside Grand Teton National Park. From Auckland you'll connect via a US hub to Jackson Hole's airport.
How to pace it: use the first three days in town for the elk refuge and a float on the Snake River, then move into the park for the lakes and the classic viewpoints. Jenny Lake and Inspiration Point fill a full day, and Mormon Row is best at sunrise, so plan an early start on the last morning in the park.
Jackson: the Town Square is framed by arches made of shed elk antlers collected from the National Elk Refuge, which was created in 1912 and protects one of the largest elk herds in North America in winter. The National Museum of Wildlife Art overlooks the refuge, and the aerial tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort climbs Rendezvous Mountain.
Grand Teton National Park was established in 1929. Grand Teton itself rises to 4,199 metres, more than 2,000 metres above the valley floor, and the range is among the youngest in the Rocky Mountains, on a fault that is still active. At Jenny Lake a boat crosses to the trails up to Inspiration Point, Oxbow Bend reflects Mount Moran in the Snake River, and the Mormon Row barns were built by settlers in the 1890s and early 1900s. Moose, bison and elk are commonly seen.
Practical notes: June to September is the season; snow closes much of the park in winter. The name Jackson Hole honours the trapper David Jackson, as early trappers called a high mountain valley a hole, so the valley and the town are not the same thing. Bison burgers and huckleberry desserts are local favourites.
Safety: this is a domestic US route, so there is no State Department advisory; for other visitors, Canada asks travellers to the US to take normal security precautions (updated 10 Oct 2026).
