A French harbour town & Hector's dolphins Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr

Canterbury, on New Zealand's South Island, has plains, mountains and a volcanic peninsula. This route spends two nights in Christchurch and four in Akaroa. From Bangkok you'll connect via Auckland or Sydney to Christchurch. Christchurch has large gardens and a heritage tram. Banks Peninsula was formed by volcanoes. Akaroa was founded by French settlers, and some streets have French names.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Christchurch: day one, Botanic Gardens; day two, tram and the city. Then spend days three to six in Akaroa: day three, drive to Akaroa; day four, harbour cruise; day five, Banks Peninsula walk; day six, rest day.

Hector's dolphins, among the smallest dolphins, live in Akaroa Harbour, and cruises go out to see them. Walking tracks cross the peninsula's hills.

Good to know: The drive to Akaroa is winding.

The city centre is compact, with the Botanic Gardens and the tram easy to reach. The drive to Akaroa takes under two hours, with views over the harbour from the summit road. In Akaroa, the waterfront has cafés, galleries and shops. Walking tracks on the peninsula range from short loops to multi-day hikes.

Fish and chips by the harbour is a local tradition. Christchurch has rebuilt much of its centre after the earthquakes, with new architecture and street art. The Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park are good for walks, and punts float on the Avon River. On Banks Peninsula, small bays and farms dot the coast, and some offer farm stays. Local cheeses and salmon are served in Akaroa's restaurants. Allow a slow final morning by the harbour before the drive back to the city.

Practical notes: November to April is the best season. Christchurch's airport is a short drive from the city centre, and buses run frequently. Harbour cruises go out to see dolphins and seabirds, and some offer swims with dolphins under permit. Accommodation in Akaroa books up in summer, so reserve ahead. Bring layers, as weather can change quickly.
