Yucatán cenotes & whale sharks Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep (whale sharks mid-May–mid-Sep)

The Yucatán Peninsula's Caribbean coast has Maya ruins, cenotes for swimming and, in summer, a gathering of whale sharks off its northern tip. This route starts in Cancún, heads south to Tulum and then north to the island of Holbox. From Bangkok you'll connect via Asia, Europe or North America, which makes this a long journey.

Cancún is the arrival point and a good place to rest after the flights. Tulum's archaeological site stands on a cliff above a beach, and inland are cenotes with clear water, some open to the sky and others in caves. Further on, the ruins of Cobá are surrounded by forest. Holbox is quieter, with sandy streets, golf carts instead of cars, and a lagoon full of birds. The main reason to come in summer is the chance to swim with whale sharks, which gather in the waters offshore. The area is managed as a protected reserve, and tours follow rules on the number of swimmers and distance from the animals.

The whale shark season usually runs from about mid-May to mid-September, peaking in July and August. This overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane season from June to November. Sargassum seaweed can be heavy on Tulum's beaches in summer, so check the state's daily beach reports.

Book whale shark tours with licensed operators and use reef-safe sunscreen. Allow flexibility in case boats are cancelled because of the weather.

Pacing tips: after the long trip from Bangkok, two nights in Cancún let you rest before driving south. Three nights in Tulum give you one day for the ruins, one for cenotes and one for Cobá, which is best visited early before the heat. On Holbox, keep one of your three days free in case the whale shark trip is moved because of wind.
