A river gorge & a World Heritage bay of dolphins and stromatolites Best season (general guide): Apr–Oct

North of Perth, Western Australia's Coral Coast has a deep river gorge and a World Heritage bay with some of the oldest life forms on Earth. This route spends three nights in Kalbarri and four at Shark Bay. From Bangkok you'll fly to Perth and drive north along the coast. Kalbarri is a coastal town in the Mid West region, 592 kilometres north of Perth, at the mouth of the Murchison River.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Kalbarri: day one, long drive north from Perth; day two, Murchison gorge lookouts; day three, coastal cliffs. Then spend days four to seven in Shark Bay: day four, road north via Hamelin Pool stromatolites; day five, Monkey Mia dolphins; day six, Denham and the bay; day seven, Peron Peninsula.

Kalbarri National Park, just inland, includes the Murchison River gorge, which runs for nearly 80 kilometres on the river's lower reaches. Coastal cliffs line the shore near the river mouth and the town. Shark Bay, called Gathaagudu, or two waters, in the Malgana language, is a World Heritage Site in the Gascoyne region, about 800 kilometres north of Perth, on the westernmost point of the Australian continent.

At Monkey Mia, bottlenose dolphins have been coming close to shore for more than fifty years, and rangers supervise the interaction between people and dolphins. Denham, on the Peron Peninsula, is the administrative town of the Shire of Shark Bay and the westernmost publicly accessible town in Australia. It is named after Captain Henry Mangles Denham of the Royal Navy, who charted Shark Bay in 1858.

The Denham area was the second part of the Australian mainland to be sighted by European sailors, after the western coast of Cape York Peninsula. The cooler months, from April to October, are the most comfortable for walking in the gorges.

Practical notes: Hamelin Pool, a marine nature reserve in the bay, has the most diverse and abundant living marine stromatolites in the world, structures built by microbes that are among the oldest forms of life.

Safety: Canada's advice for Australia is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Australia Level 1 (18 Aug 2026).
