Levada hiking Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Madeira, a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, is famous for walking along its levadas, irrigation channels that wind along the mountainsides, with footpaths beside them. This route uses Funchal as a single base for the whole stay, with day trips out to different parts of the island. The itinerary spends six nights in Funchal (Madeira).

How to pace it: Spend days one to six in Funchal (Madeira): day one, old town and market; day two, Monte cable car; day three, levada walk; day four, Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo; day five, north coast and Porto Moniz; day six, free day.

Funchal has a botanical garden, a busy fruit and fish market, a cable car up to Monte and the wicker toboggan ride back down. From the city, buses, taxis and guided tours reach the trailheads. Popular walks include the routes to the Caldeirão Verde waterfall and the 25 Fontes springs, and the high-level hike between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo above the clouds. The north coast villages, such as São Vicente and Porto Moniz with its natural rock pools, make easier days out.

The levadas can be walked year-round thanks to the mild climate. Spring, from April to June, and early autumn, September to October, are usually the most pleasant for walking.

Check the official trail status before each walk, as paths can be closed after storms or for repairs. Some routes include tunnels, so bring a torch and good shoes.

Bus routes from Funchal reach most trailheads, and guided walks with transport take the planning off your hands. On a rest day, Blandy's Wine Lodge in central Funchal offers tastings and guided tours of Madeira wine.

Practical notes: From Berlin there are direct flights in season and frequent one-stop options. Weather varies widely between the coast, the north and the mountains, so check conditions on the day. Because the whole stay is in one place, you can pick walks day by day to suit the weather: the mountain hike when the peaks are clear, a coastal levada when cloud sits on the heights, and a slow day in town when your legs need a rest.
