Colonial ports, cave temples & street food Best season (general guide): Year-round (wetter Oct–Mar on the west coast)

Malaysia's west coast was shaped by centuries of trade between China, India and Europe. This route spends six nights between Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Ipoh. From Berlin you'll connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or another hub to Kuala Lumpur.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Kuala Lumpur: day one, Petronas Towers; day two, Batu Caves. Then spend days three and four in Melaka: day three, bus to Melaka, then Dutch Square; day four, Jonker Street night market. Then spend days five and six in Ipoh: day five, road to Kuala Lumpur, ETS train to Ipoh, then the old town; day six, cave temples.

Start in Kuala Lumpur, a modern capital dominated by the twin Petronas Towers. North of the city, climb the long, colourful staircase to the Batu Caves, a Hindu shrine in limestone caves.

UNESCO lists Melaka with George Town, on Penang, as historic cities of the Straits of Malacca. Its centre has Dutch buildings, the ruins of the Portuguese fort A Famosa and a lively night market on Jonker Street.

Ipoh, north of the capital, is an old tin-mining town with colonial shophouses and murals.

In Ipoh, try the white coffee and the town's own street food.

The climate is tropical all year, with more rain on the west coast in some months.

Practical notes: trains and buses are good and cheap. Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and carry water in the heat.

Kuala Lumpur's hawker centres and night markets are the best introduction to Malaysian food, from nasi lemak to satay. In Melaka, walk the riverside path in the evening, when the old buildings are lit. Ipoh is small enough to explore on foot, and its murals and cafés fill a slow afternoon. Take the train between Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh; it is fast and comfortable. Carry a light jacket for the cold air-conditioning inside trains and malls. Melaka's Peranakan food, a mix of Chinese and Malay cooking, is worth seeking out.

Safety note: Canada advises normal precautions in Malaysia (advisory updated 9 Oct 2026); its high-caution area on the east coast of Sabah is far from this route.
