Golden Triangle Best season (general guide): Oct–Mar

The Golden Triangle is India's best-known introduction, linking Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by fast trains and roads. From Bogotá you'll connect via Europe or the Gulf to Delhi, and you can fly home from Jaipur.

In Delhi, a cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk and the Jama Masjid shows the old city, while Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar, both listed by UNESCO, show its Mughal and earlier history. The train to Agra takes you to the Taj Mahal, which many people visit at sunrise, and Agra Fort across the river. On the way to Jaipur, Fatehpur Sikri is a deserted Mughal city. In Jaipur, the Amber Fort above Maota Lake, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar's giant astronomical instruments are the highlights, and the old city's bazaars are good for textiles and jewellery.

October to March is the best time, with warm days and cool nights. April to June is extremely hot, and the monsoon follows.

Most visitors need an e-visa. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Dress modestly at religious sites, and agree prices before taking taxis or rickshaws.

How to pace it: the flights from Bogotá are long, with at least one connection, so allow a quiet first day in Delhi before the busy streets of Old Delhi. The early train to Agra means you can be at the Taj Mahal soon after it opens, and spend the afternoon at Agra Fort. The road to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri takes most of a day. In Jaipur, visit the Amber Fort in the morning, as it gets hot and crowded later, and keep the evenings for the bazaars. Fly home from Jaipur or return to Delhi by train.
