Volcanic fields & endless dunes Best season (general guide): Year-round

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the eastern Canary Islands, are dry, sunny and close to Africa, with volcanic landscapes on one and long beaches on the other. This route spends three nights on each. From Bogotá you'll connect via Madrid to Lanzarote, cross by ferry and fly home from Fuerteventura.

How to pace it: give Lanzarote one day for Timanfaya and one for César Manrique's lava-tube spaces, then take the ferry to Corralejo. On Fuerteventura, spend a day on the dunes and beaches and a day on the boat to Lobos, and keep the inland valley of Betancuria for the drive back to the airport.

Lanzarote: the Timanfaya eruptions lasted from 1730 to 1736 and buried villages under lava. At the park's Islote de Hilario, guides pour water into holes in the ground, which shoots up as steam, and a restaurant grills food over the volcanic heat. The artist César Manrique shaped the island's look, campaigned against high-rise building and designed the Jameos del Agua, a concert hall and pool in a lava tube, and the Mirador del Río, which looks across to La Graciosa. The Cueva de los Verdes, next to the Jameos, is visited on guided tours, and in La Geria vines grow in hollows dug in black ash. The island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993.

Fuerteventura is the second-largest of the Canaries and the oldest geologically, and it is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Corralejo dunes form a natural park in the north, small Lobos island lies just offshore, and Betancuria holds the island's first capital, founded in the fifteenth century. Its goats produce Majorero cheese, which has protected designation of origin status.

Practical notes: the islands are sunny all year, and the winds are strongest in summer. Ferries link Playa Blanca on Lanzarote with Corralejo. Papas arrugadas, wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce, are the Canarian classic to order.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to the Canary Islands to take normal security precautions (updated 3 Jul 2026), and the US rates Spain Level 2 (1 Aug 2026).
