Industrial heritage, football & moorland walks Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Manchester was the world's first industrial city, and just beyond it lies Britain's first national park. This route spends three nights in Manchester and three in the Peak District. From Bogotá you'll connect through a European hub to Manchester.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Manchester: day one, the city centre; day two, Science and Industry Museum; day three, John Rylands Library and a football tour. Then spend days four to six in the Peak District: day four, train to the Peak District; day five, Mam Tor ridge walk and Castleton caves; day six, Chatsworth and Bakewell.

The Science and Industry Museum is housed in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station. The John Rylands Library, a Gothic building, holds rare books and manuscripts.

Manchester is famous for its music scene and its football clubs, and stadium tours at Old Trafford are popular.

The city centre has grand Victorian buildings, canals and lively neighbourhoods such as the Northern Quarter.

The Peak District, south-east of the city, was Britain's first national park. Trains reach villages such as Edale and Hope, starting points for walks onto the moors.

Mam Tor, a hill above Castleton, has a ridge walk with wide views. Castleton has caverns open to visitors.

Chatsworth House, a grand stately home, has gardens and art collections. Nearby Bakewell is known for its Bakewell pudding.

May to September is the mildest season, but rain is common.

Manchester's centre is walkable, and trams fan out to the suburbs, so there is no need for a car while you are in the city. For the Peak District, local trains run from Piccadilly to the edge of the hills, and many walks start close to village stations. Paths can be muddy after rain, so bring boots with grip. Pubs in the villages often serve food at fixed hours, so check before you set out on a long walk, and carry a map, since mobile signal is patchy in the valleys.

Good to know: Trains and buses link the Peak District villages with Manchester. Carry waterproofs on the moors, and close farm gates behind you.
