A city of three cultures & a Roman aqueduct Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Two of Castile's great historic cities lie within easy reach of Madrid by fast train, which makes this a relaxed first trip to Spain. The route spends three nights in Toledo and three in Segovia. From Bogotá you'll fly to Madrid, then take the train.

How to pace it: Toledo sits on a rocky hill wrapped by the Tagus river, and its historic city, where Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities lived for centuries, was listed by UNESCO in 1986. After arriving, give day two to the Gothic cathedral, one of Spain's largest, and the old town's lanes. Day three is for El Greco, who worked in the city: his Burial of the Count of Orgaz hangs in the Church of Santo Tomé, with the El Greco Museum nearby, and two former synagogues, including El Tránsito, now a museum, recall Toledo's Jewish heritage. Toledo was famous for its steel, and craftsmen still make swords and damascene work.

On day four, travel via Madrid to Segovia, listed by UNESCO in 1985 with its aqueduct. The Roman aqueduct, built of granite blocks without mortar around the first or second century, strides across the lower town; see it on day five with the cathedral, finished in the eighteenth century and one of the last Gothic cathedrals built in Spain. Keep day six for the Alcázar, a former royal palace and military academy on a rock at the end of the old town, now a museum.

Practical notes: spring and autumn are the best seasons, as summers are hot and winters cold. Segovia's dish is cochinillo asado, roast suckling pig.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Spain to take a high degree of caution (updated 13 Aug 2026), and the US rates Spain Level 2 (1 Aug 2026).
