Borneo orangutans Best season (general guide): Mar–Oct

Sabah, the Malaysian state on the northern tip of Borneo, pairs a relaxed coastal capital with some of the best-known wildlife centres in South-East Asia. This plan gives three nights to each half. From Buenos Aires it is a very long journey with at least two connections, often through the Gulf or a major Asian hub, so build in a rest day after landing. The itinerary spends three nights in Kota Kinabalu and three nights in Sandakan (Sepilok).

Kota Kinabalu faces the South China Sea, and its evening waterfront market is a good first stop for grilled fish and tropical fruit. Short boat rides from the jetty reach the small islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park for snorkelling. A day trip inland climbs into the cooler air of Kinabalu Park, where the garden trails sit beneath the mountain rather than on it.

A short domestic flight takes you east to Sandakan. At Sepilok, rescued orangutans come to feeding platforms in the forest, and the neighbouring sun bear centre works with the smallest of the bears. If you have energy left, a boat trip on the Kinabatangan River looks for proboscis monkeys and hornbills along the banks.

The drier months run from about March to October, and November to February is wetter. Rain falls in every month here, so pack a light jacket and plan river trips early or late in the day.

Safety note: Canada advises normal precautions in Malaysia but a high degree of caution on the east coast of Sabah between Kudat and Tawau, including islands and offshore dive sites; Sandakan lies in this area (updated 9 Oct 2026). The US advises increased caution on islands and maritime areas off eastern Sabah due to kidnapping risk, with night-time sea curfews (Level 1 overall, issued 22 Feb 2026).

Sepilok is on land; skip offshore island trips or follow local curfews.
