Fiji islands Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Fiji's Mamanuca Islands are close to the international airport, so you can be on a small coral island within hours of landing. This route spends a night in Nadi and then a longer stay out in the islands. From Buenos Aires you'll connect via Santiago, Auckland or another hub to reach Nadi.

Nadi has the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple, markets, and Port Denarau, from which ferries leave for the islands. The Mamanuca group stretches out to the west, with some islands home to a single resort and others to villages. Days revolve around snorkelling, diving, kayaking and boat trips to sandbanks. Village visits, when arranged by resorts with the community, often include a kava ceremony, and many resorts offer Fijian feasts cooked in an earth oven. Catamaran services connect several islands, so it's possible to split your stay.

The drier, cooler season from about May to October is the best time to visit, with calmer seas. November to April is wetter and is also cyclone season, with the highest risk from about January to March.

Book the boat transfer with your resort, and check schedules for the day of arrival. Dress modestly when visiting villages, covering shoulders and knees.

How to pace it: the journey from Buenos Aires crosses the Pacific and the International Date Line, so you lose a calendar day on the way out. A night in Nadi helps you recover and catch a morning boat. Six nights on the islands is long enough to relax, and you could split them between two resorts on the catamaran route. Leave the last morning free in case the boat back is delayed, and plan your flight out with plenty of margin.
