Buenos Aires to the Kvarner Gulf: Opatija and Rijeka
Buenos Aires → Opatija → Rijeka
A Habsburg seaside resort & a port city Best season (general guide): May–Sep
The Kvarner Gulf, at the top of Croatia's coast, was where the Habsburg empire came to winter by the sea. This route spends four nights in Opatija and two in Rijeka. From Buenos Aires you'll connect through a European hub to Rijeka's airport, on the island of Krk. Opatija is a traditional seaside resort known for its mild Mediterranean climate and grand buildings that recall the Austrian Riviera.
How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Opatija: day one, the seafront villas; day two, walk the Lungomare; day three, Villa Angiolina park; day four, swim and rest. Then spend days five and six in Rijeka: day five, bus to Rijeka, then the Korzo; day six, Trsat Castle.
The Lungomare, a seafront promenade, runs for about 12 kilometres along the coast from Volosko to Lovran, past villas and coves. Villa Angiolina, built in the 1840s, is often said to mark the start of Opatija's life as a resort, and its park holds plants from around the world. Rijeka, a short ride along the bay, is Croatia's principal seaport and third-largest city. Because of its deep-water port, it changed hands many times between empires and states.
Trsat Castle stands on a hill above the city, with views over the Rječina canyon and the gulf. Rijeka was a European Capital of Culture in 2020, and its carnival, held before Lent, is one of the largest in Europe. The resort's season runs from May to September. Opatija lies in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, and in German it was called Sankt Jakobi, after the Benedictine abbey of St James around which the town grew.
The Croatian name Opatija itself means abbey. It is on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic, and was contested by the Holy Roman Empire, Venice, Hungary, Italy and Yugoslavia over the centuries. The Torpedo was developed in Rijeka in the nineteenth century, and the old torpedo factory's launch station still stands by the harbour. Kvarner scampi, from the gulf's deep, cold waters, are a prized local seafood.
Safety: Canada's advice for Croatia is to take normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Croatia Level 1 (18 May 2026).
