Ryukyu castles & turquoise reefs Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Oct–Nov

Okinawa was once the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, and its culture, food and climate still feel distinct from mainland Japan. This route spends three nights in Naha, the capital, and three in the Kerama Islands, 32 kilometres to the west. From Cairo you'll connect via Tokyo or another hub to Naha.

How to pace it: arrive and walk Kokusai Street, Naha's main shopping street. Day two is for the castle sites of the Ryukyu Kingdom, listed by UNESCO in 2000: Shuri Castle's main hall burned in 2019 and is being rebuilt, but the grounds and gates are open, and Shikinaen, a royal garden, is part of the same listing. On day three, go to the Makishi public market, where you can buy fish and have it cooked upstairs.

Then take the ferry to Tokashiki or Zamami, the main Kerama islands. The Keramashoto National Park was designated on 5 March 2014 and is known for very clear water and coral reefs, so give day five to the beaches and snorkelling and day six to island walks and lookouts. Zamami's waters are also a Ramsar wetland, and humpback whales pass in winter.

Okinawan food is worth seeking out: goya champuru, a stir-fry with bitter melon, Okinawa soba, a noodle soup, and awamori, the islands' distilled spirit. Karate developed here, and you may hear the sanshin, a three-stringed instrument covered with snakeskin.

Practical notes: spring and late autumn are the best seasons, as summer and early autumn bring typhoons that can cancel ferries, so keep the last day flexible before your flight from Naha.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Japan to take normal security precautions (updated 29 Sep 2026), and the US rates Japan Level 1 (15 May 2025).
