Ruined temples by lotus ponds Best season (general guide): Nov–Feb

Sukhothai was the capital of the first Siamese kingdom in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Walk among its ruins, with Buddhas and lotus ponds, among the most peaceful sights in Thailand. This route spends four nights in Sukhothai and two at Si Satchanalai. From Cairo you'll connect via Bangkok to Sukhothai. UNESCO lists Sukhothai with its associated towns, Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet. The historical park is spread over a wide area, and the best way to explore is by bicycle.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Sukhothai: day one, the old city at sunset; day two, central zone by bike; day three, Wat Si Chum and the outer temples; day four, museum and noodles. Then spend days five and six in Si Satchanalai: day five, drive to Si Satchanalai; day six, kilns and Chaliang.

Start at Wat Mahathat, the main temple, with rows of columns and seated Buddhas, with stupas shaped like lotus buds. At Wat Si Chum, a huge seated Buddha fills a roofless hall, its hand resting over its knee. To the north, explore the temples of Si Satchanalai in a forest by the Yom river. Kilns here produced Sangkhalok ware, ceramics traded across Asia.

Sukhothai is said to be the birthplace of Loy Krathong, the festival of floating offerings, celebrated with lights in the historical park.

Practical notes: rent a bike for each zone, and start early or late to avoid the heat. Try Sukhothai noodles, a local dish, at stalls in the new town.

Sukhothai's old city lies some distance from the new town, so stay near the historical park or take a songthaew between the two each day.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Thailand (advisory updated 22 Sep 2026); its avoid-all zones, near the Cambodian border and in the far south, and its Myanmar-border caution areas of Mae Hong Son and Tak are away from this route. The US rates Thailand Level 1 (issued 7 Jul 2026).
