Granite coast & giant trees Best season (general guide): Oct–Apr

Western Australia's south coast has granite headlands, forests and beaches. This route spends three nights in Albany and three in Denmark. From Delhi you'll connect via Perth to Albany. Albany was the first European settlement in Western Australia. Torndirrup National Park has the Gap and Natural Bridge, granite formations above the sea. Denmark is a small town among forest.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Albany, Western Australia: day one, the harbour; day two, Torndirrup coast; day three, historic town. Then spend days four to six in Denmark, Western Australia: day four, drive to Denmark; day five, Valley of the Giants; day six, Elephant Rocks.

The Valley of the Giants has a treetop walk among tingle trees. Elephant Rocks are boulders on the shore near Denmark.

Good to know: A car is needed. Watch for kangaroos at dusk.

Albany's small airport has flights from Perth, and rental cars are available. A car is essential, as public transport is limited. The coast is rugged, with strong swells, so swim only at sheltered beaches. In Torndirrup, stay behind barriers at the Gap and Natural Bridge, as waves can be dangerous. The drive to Denmark is short, through farmland and forest. The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk is a highlight, with a walkway through the forest canopy. Accommodation in both towns includes cottages and small hotels.

Local markets sell produce from the region. Denmark has a relaxed arts scene, with galleries and markets. Wineries in the area offer tastings, and some have restaurants. Bring a picnic for the beaches and forest walks. Allow time on the last morning for the drive back to Albany for the flight.

Practical notes: October to April is the best season. Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool are popular for swimming in calm weather. Bring layers, as weather can change quickly on the south coast. Whales can be seen off the coast in season, and Albany's history as a whaling town is told at a former whaling station, now a museum.
