Delhi to Burgundy: Dijon and Beaune
Delhi → Dijon → Beaune
Dukes' palace, wine villages & mustard Best season (general guide): May–Oct
Burgundy, in eastern France, was once a powerful duchy, and today it is known for some of the world's most famous wine. This route spends three nights in Dijon and three in Beaune. From Delhi you'll fly to Paris, then take a fast train to Dijon.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Dijon: day one, TGV from Paris to Dijon; day two, Palace of the Dukes and the Owl trail; day three, market and mustard. Then spend days four to six in Beaune: day four, train to Beaune, then Hospices de Beaune; day five, Route des Grands Crus by bike; day six, wine village day.
Dijon was the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy, and their palace now holds the city hall and a fine arts museum. The streets around it are full of old townhouses with patterned roofs.
A small stone owl carved on a church wall, the Owl of Dijon, is a lucky symbol; brass arrows set in the pavement lead visitors on a walk past the main sights.
Dijon's name is linked to mustard, and shops in the centre sell many flavours.
Beaune, south of Dijon, is the wine capital of Burgundy. The Hospices de Beaune, a medieval hospital, has a roof covered in glazed tiles in bright geometric patterns.
Between the two towns, the Côte d'Or is a narrow slope of vineyards. UNESCO lists its climats, small plots of land with their own names and wines. The Route des Grands Crus winds through the villages.
May to October is the best season, with the harvest in late summer and early autumn.
Good to know: Trains link Dijon and Beaune in under half an hour. Bikes are a pleasant way to reach the wine villages on quiet roads.
Many wine estates in Burgundy are small family domaines that receive visitors only by appointment, so write ahead or book through the tourist office. Hiring bicycles for the flat stretch of vineyard lanes between villages is a gentle alternative to driving after tastings.
Many cellars need booking ahead, especially at weekends. If you drive, let someone else taste the wine.
