Spain highlights Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Spain's greatest cities can be linked by fast trains and short flights, and this route covers the capital, two of Andalusia's Moorish jewels and Barcelona on the Mediterranean. From Delhi you'll connect via the Gulf or a European hub to Madrid, and fly home from Barcelona. The itinerary spends three nights in Madrid, two nights in Seville, two nights in Granada and three nights in Barcelona.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Madrid: day one, Plaza Mayor; day two, Prado; day three, Retiro and Reina Sofía. Then spend days four and five in Seville: day four, high-speed train, then cathedral; day five, Alcázar and Santa Cruz. Then spend days six and seven in Granada: day six, travel to Granada, then Albaicín at sunset; day seven, Alhambra. Then spend days eight to ten in Barcelona: day eight, fly to Barcelona, then Gothic Quarter; day nine, Sagrada Família; day ten, Park Güell and the beach.

Madrid's art museums are world-class, especially the Prado, and evenings are for tapas around the Plaza Mayor and La Latina. The high-speed train south reaches Seville in a few hours. There, the Alcázar's palaces and gardens, the cathedral and the tiled Plaza de España are the highlights, and flamenco shows are easy to find. Granada's Alhambra, with its palaces, courtyards and gardens, is the key reason to stop, and the view of it from the Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset is well known. A flight then takes you to Barcelona, where Gaudí's buildings, the Gothic Quarter and the seafront fill the last days.

Spring, from about April to June, and autumn, from September to October, are the most comfortable times. In July and August, Seville can be extremely hot and the cities are busy.

Book timed tickets for the Alhambra's Nasrid Palaces and the Sagrada Família as early as possible, as they often sell out. Spanish meal times are late, with dinner often after 9 pm.

Vegetarian travellers will find Spain's tapas culture easier than its reputation suggests, with dishes such as patatas bravas, pisto and tortilla widely available. In Granada, most bars still serve a small tapa with each drink at no extra charge, a tradition worth trying in the Albaicín.
