A walled village & the home of giant waves Best season (general guide): May–Oct

North of Lisbon, Portugal's Silver Coast combines quiet walled towns with the most famous big-wave break in the world. This route spends three nights in Óbidos and three in Nazaré. From Delhi you'll connect through a hub to Lisbon, then take the bus north. Óbidos is a small town in the Oeste region, with about 3,100 people living in the town itself. Its medieval walls enclose a maze of white houses and narrow streets.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Óbidos, which Portuguese kings traditionally gave to their queens as a wedding gift: day one, bus from Lisbon; day two, walk the walls; day three, lagoon and the coast. Then spend days four to six in Nazaré: day four, bus to Nazaré, then the beach; day five, funicular to Sítio and the fort; day six, Alcobaça Monastery.

Óbidos castle has been turned into a hotel, and you can walk along the top of the walls. Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur, is sold in the town, often in small chocolate cups. Nazaré is one of the most popular resorts on the Silver Coast. It is famous for its huge waves and surfing competitions, which form in winter.

The waves are amplified by the Nazaré Canyon, a deep underwater canyon that runs right up to the shore. The American surfer Garrett McNamara brought the waves world attention in 2011, when he rode one at Praia do Norte. A funicular links the beach with Sítio, the old quarter on the cliff above, where the lighthouse fort looks over the waves.

Inland, the Monastery of Alcobaça is one of the great Gothic churches of Portugal and is listed by UNESCO. Back on the coast, Nazaré is known for its women who still wear seven layered skirts, by tradition.

Nazaré has around 10,000 people in the town itself and lies in the Leiria District. Grilled sardines and dried fish, laid out on racks on the beach, are a Nazaré tradition.

Safety: Canada's advice for Portugal is to take normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Portugal Level 1 (23 Dec 2025).
