Sri Lanka's dry zone, in the north-central plains, holds the ruins of the island's great ancient kingdoms. This route spends three nights in Anuradhapura and three in Polonnaruwa. From Doha you'll fly to Colombo, then drive north. Anuradhapura is the capital of North Central Province, about 205 kilometres north of Colombo, on the banks of the Malwathu Oya.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Anuradhapura: day one, drive from Colombo; day two, the sacred bodhi tree and the stupas; day three, Mihintale. Then spend days four to six in Polonnaruwa: day four, road to Polonnaruwa; day five, the ancient city by bicycle; day six, Minneriya elephants.

Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for over a thousand years, and its sacred city is listed by UNESCO. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a fig tree said to have grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha reached enlightenment.

The white dome of the Ruwanwelisaya stupa is one of the most venerated in the country. Mihintale, a hill east of the city, is where Buddhism is said to have been introduced to Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka, after Anuradhapura, and its ancient city is a UNESCO site.

At the Gal Vihara, four images of the Buddha are carved into a single granite rock face. In the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather around the reservoir of Minneriya National Park, nearby.

Anuradhapura was one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins. Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was sacked in 993.
