Komodo dragons & diving Best season (general guide): Apr–Nov (best May–Sep)

Labuan Bajo is a small harbour town at the western tip of Flores, in Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara islands, and the jumping-off point for Komodo National Park. From Doha the journey usually connects through Jakarta or Bali before a short domestic flight lands you a few minutes from the waterfront. What waits beyond the harbour is a scattered archipelago of dry hills, pink-tinged beaches and coral reefs, home to the Komodo dragon, the largest living lizard.

The trip is short and deliberately simple: a couple of nights on land, then time on the water. Spending your first nights in town lets you recover from the flights, watch the sunset over the bay and choose a boat that suits you. That might be a day trip on a speedboat or an overnight stay aboard a wooden phinisi, the traditional Indonesian sailing vessel. Inside the park, rangers lead walks on Komodo or Rinca islands to see the dragons, and the hike up Padar gives one of the best-known viewpoints in Indonesia. Snorkelling and diving fill the rest of the time, including reef spots where manta rays are often seen.

Visit in the dry season, from April to November. May, June and September are often recommended for calm crossings with fewer boats than the July and August peak. In the wettest months, roughly late January to March, swell can keep vessels in port. Park entry is managed and operators change their itineraries with conditions, so confirm what your boat includes before you commit.

The dragons are wild predators, so walks always follow the rangers' rules on distance and group size. Wear closed shoes for the dusty trails and bring plenty of water, as the islands get little shade.
