Turtle beaches, canals & Afro-Caribbean coast Best season (general guide): Jul–Oct (turtles)

Costa Rica's Caribbean coast is wetter and less visited than the Pacific side. This route spends three nights in Tortuguero and three in Puerto Viejo. From Doha you'll connect via a European or US hub to San José.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Tortuguero: day one, road and boat to Tortuguero; day two, canal boat tour; day three, night turtle walk. Then spend days four to six in Puerto Viejo: day four, travel south to Puerto Viejo; day five, Cahuita National Park; day six, Manzanillo refuge.

Tortuguero, reached by road and boat, is a village between canals and the sea. Tortuguero National Park protects a beach where green turtles nest.

Guided night walks let visitors watch turtles nest in season.

Boat tours along the canals show monkeys, sloths and birds.

Puerto Viejo, to the south, is a village with Afro-Caribbean culture. Cahuita National Park has a coastal trail and coral reef, and Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge protects forest and beaches.

July to October is the main turtle season.

Good to know: Turtle walks need licensed guides. Bring rain gear.

Tortuguero village has no roads, only sandy paths, small shops and lodges by the canals. Early morning canoe trips are quiet and good for spotting wildlife. Turtle walks are limited in numbers, and photography is not allowed during nesting. The national park has a short trail through the forest by the beach. In Puerto Viejo, bikes are the best way to reach the beaches south of the village. Caribbean food here includes rice and beans cooked in coconut milk. Cahuita's coastal trail is easy and often shows monkeys and sloths. Swim only where locals do, as currents can be strong. Carry insect repellent, and bring cash, as some places don't take cards.

Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Costa Rica because of crime (updated 9 Oct 2026). On the Caribbean coast, it names Cahuita, Puerto Limón and Puerto Viejo as areas of particular concern for theft. The US rates Costa Rica Level 2 (issued 2 Apr 2026). Keep valuables out of sight and don't leave anything in cars.

Pack light, quick-drying clothes and a dry bag for the boat rides between the two stops.
