Volcanic crater lake & Batak culture Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Lake Toba, in northern Sumatra, fills the crater of a supervolcano and is the largest lake in Indonesia. This route spends one night in Medan and five on Samosir Island in the lake. From Dubai you'll connect via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta to Medan.

How to pace it: Spend day one in Medan: Maimun Palace. Then spend days two to six at Lake Toba (Samosir): day two, drive and ferry to Samosir; day three, Batak villages and tombs; day four, cycle the shore; day five, Sipiso-piso waterfall; day six, swim and rest.

Medan is a large, busy city. The Maimun Palace, the home of a sultan, mixes Malay, Mughal and European styles.

The lake formed after a huge eruption tens of thousands of years ago, one of the largest known. Samosir, an island in the lake about the size of Singapore, is reached by ferry from Parapat.

The Batak people live around the lake, and their villages have traditional houses with saddle-shaped roofs. Stone tombs and old meeting places can be seen on Samosir.

North of the lake, the Sipiso-piso waterfall drops into a gorge, with views over the water.

May to September is usually drier, although rain can fall at any time.

Good to know: The drive from Medan to the lake takes several hours. Scooters and bikes can be hired on Samosir. Dress modestly in villages and churches.

Medan is a food city, with Malay, Chinese and Indian dishes in its street stalls. On Samosir, the main tourist village is quiet and set on a small peninsula, with guesthouses on the water. Swimming in the lake is popular, and the water is fresh and cool. Batak music and dance are performed in some villages, and woven cloth, ulos, is sold in markets. Bring cash, as ATMs are limited on the island. Take the ferry back early on your last day to leave time for the drive to the airport. Allow for traffic on the roads out of Medan, which can be slow.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Indonesia; its avoid-non-essential area is Indonesian Papua, far from Sumatra (advisory updated 10 Sep 2026). The US rates Indonesia Level 2 (issued 7 Jul 2026).
