Limestone karsts & river caves Best season (general guide): Oct–Apr

South of Hanoi, the land breaks into limestone towers rising from rivers and rice paddies. This route spends six nights in Ninh Bình. From Dubai there are flights to Hanoi, then a road transfer south. The Tràng An Landscape Complex, listed by UNESCO, is a landscape of karst peaks and caves. Rowing boats glide along rivers and through caves under the rock.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six in Ninh Bình: day one, road from Hanoi; day two, Tràng An boat; day three, Hoa Lư ancient capital; day four, Tam Cốc by bike; day five, Cúc Phương forest; day six, Hang Múa viewpoint.

Hoa Lư was Vietnam's capital in the tenth century, and temples to its early kings remain. Tam Cốc, nearby, has another river trip through caves and paddies, and cycling along the quiet roads is a pleasure. Bái Đính Temple is a huge Buddhist complex with long galleries of statues. Cúc Phương National Park, Vietnam's oldest national park, protects forest and rescue centres for primates.

October to April is the drier season.

Good to know: A week in one base allows slow days. Climb to Hang Múa for views over the karsts at sunset.

Ninh Bình is a few hours' drive from Hanoi, and many hotels arrange transfers. Once there, bicycles are the best way to explore the rice fields and villages around Tam Cốc. The rowing boat trips at Tràng An take a few hours, so set aside a morning or afternoon for them. The climb to the Hang Múa viewpoint is short but steep, with views over the river and karst peaks. Bring a hat and water, as there is little shade in the fields. Goat meat is a local speciality, served in many restaurants around the area. Stay in a homestay in the countryside for quieter evenings than in town.

Goat meat and crispy rice are local dishes. Bring insect repellent. Evenings in the countryside are quiet, so bring a book and enjoy the views of the karst at dusk.
