Ancient monasteries & mountain forest Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Armenia is a small, mountainous country in the South Caucasus, with ancient churches and a strong tradition of hospitality. This route spends three nights in Yerevan and three in Dilijan. The Cascade, a giant stairway with art and views of Mount Ararat on clear days, and the Matenadaran, a museum of ancient manuscripts, are highlights.

Echmiatsin, near the city, is the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and UNESCO lists its cathedral and churches with the ruins of Zvartnots. Garni Temple is a Greco-Roman temple above a gorge, and the monastery of Geghard, partly carved into the cliff, is listed by UNESCO. Lake Sevan is a large high-altitude lake, and the monastery of Sevanavank sits on a peninsula above it.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Yerevan: day one, the Cascade; day two, Matenadaran and Echmiatsin; day three, Garni Temple and Geghard. Then spend days four to six in Dilijan: day four, Lake Sevan and Sevanavank; day five, Haghartsin Monastery; day six, Dilijan National Park walk.

Practical notes: a driver or tour is the easiest way to reach the sights, and mountain roads can be slow, so allow time between sites. Dilijan, north of the lake, is surrounded by forest in a national park, and Haghartsin Monastery is hidden in the woods nearby. Lavash, the thin flatbread baked in a clay oven, is on every table; UNESCO lists the tradition. Armenian food is generous, with grilled meats, herbs and flatbreads, so plan long lunches. Dress modestly in churches and monasteries.

Safety note: Canada advises normal security precautions in Armenia, but avoiding all travel within 1 km of the eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan (updated 27 May 2026). The US rates Armenia Level 2 and says do not travel to the border region with Azerbaijan (issued 5 Sep 2025). Yerevan, Garni, Lake Sevan and Dilijan are outside these areas; don't continue from Dilijan towards Ijevan and Noyemberyan.

In Dilijan, the old craft street has workshops and small cafés, a pleasant place to spend a slow afternoon after walks in the forest.
