Beaches, vineyards & caves Best season (general guide): Oct–Apr

Western Australia's south-west corner is a region of wineries, surf beaches and forest. This route spends two nights in Perth and four in Margaret River. From Hong Kong you'll fly to Perth. Perth is a sunny city on the Swan River.

On the way south, stop at Busselton Jetty, one of the longest timber jetties in the world. Margaret River is known for wine, and you can visit many wineries for tastings. The Cape to Cape Track follows the coast. Limestone caves lie beneath the coastal ridge nearby. October to April is the warm season.

Practical notes: you'll need to hire a car. Don't drink and drive.

Perth's centre is close to the river; take the train to Fremantle for markets and old port buildings. Take the ferry to Rottnest Island, home to quokkas, small marsupials. At Busselton Jetty, visit the underwater observatory. Margaret River town has cafés, breweries and shops, and the wineries are spread across the countryside. Beaches on the coast range from surf breaks to calm bays such as Meelup. Forests of karri and jarrah trees fill the inland valleys. Cape Leeuwin, at the far south-west corner, is a windy place to watch the swell roll in. Choose a driver or tour for wine tasting. Kangaroos are common at dawn and dusk, so drive carefully then.

Safety: Canada advises normal precautions in Australia (advisory updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates it Level 1 (issued 18 Aug 2026).

Getting there and around: fly into Perth, go on to Margaret River overland, and return overland to Perth for the flight home.

Plan one slow beach day in Margaret River, and one inland among the forests and caves, before the long drive back north, and keep the rest of the plan relaxed and unhurried.
