Rainforest meets reef Best season (general guide): Jun–Oct

In Tropical North Queensland, two UNESCO sites meet. This route spends three nights in Port Douglas and three in the Daintree. From Hong Kong you'll fly to Cairns. The Great Barrier Reef is listed by UNESCO, and boats leave Port Douglas for the outer reef. The Wet Tropics of Queensland are listed by UNESCO for their rainforest.

Mossman Gorge has a river among rainforest, with guided walks. A cable ferry crosses the Daintree River. Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest reaches the beach. Crocodiles live in rivers and on the coast, so don't swim where warned. June to October is the dry season.

Good to know: In summer, marine stingers are present, so swim in protected areas or wear a stinger suit.

Cairns airport is about an hour's drive from Port Douglas, and shuttles run regularly. Reef trips from Port Douglas take a full day, with snorkelling and diving on the outer reef. Choose an operator with good environmental practices. Expect queues for the Daintree River ferry in peak season. Beyond the river, roads are narrow, and mobile coverage is limited. Accommodation in the Daintree ranges from rainforest lodges to camping. Bring insect repellent, as mosquitoes and sandflies are common. Swim only at safe spots, and observe crocodile warning signs.

In the Daintree, guided night walks reveal the rainforest's nocturnal life, including frogs, insects and possums. Ice cream made from tropical fruit is sold at farms along the road. Indigenous-led tours share the culture and history of the rainforest's traditional owners. Plan a slow final morning on Four Mile Beach before the drive back to Cairns airport. Port Douglas has a relaxed main street of cafés and shops, a good place to spend an easy afternoon.

Getting there and around: fly into Cairns, go on to Port Douglas overland, go on to Daintree overland, and return overland to Cairns for the flight home.
