Istanbul to the Western Cape: the Cederberg and the West Coast
Istanbul → Cederberg → West Coast, South Africa
Rock art, sandstone & spring flowers Best season (general guide): Aug–Oct (flowers), Mar–May
North of Cape Town, the Western Cape becomes drier and wilder. This route spends three nights in the Cederberg and three on the West Coast. From Istanbul you'll fly to Cape Town, then drive north. The Cederberg is a range of orange sandstone mountains, with rock formations, hiking trails and San rock paintings. The Wolfberg Arch is a natural rock arch reached on a hike.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Cederberg: day one, drive north from Cape Town; day two, rock art trail; day three, Wolfberg Arch hike. Then spend days four to six on the West Coast, South Africa: day four, drive to the coast; day five, west Coast National Park; day six, paternoster.
Rooibos, a red bush tea, grows only in this region. Clanwilliam is the main town. On the coast, West Coast National Park surrounds the Langebaan Lagoon, rich in birds. In spring, wildflowers cover the fields. Paternoster is a fishing village of white cottages and seafood restaurants. Late winter and spring bring the flowers.
Good to know: A car is needed. Gravel roads in the Cederberg are slow.
Cape Town's airport is the start, and the drive north to the Cederberg takes a few hours on good roads, with the last stretch on gravel. Accommodation in the mountains ranges from campsites to farm cottages, so book ahead in the flower season. In the Cederberg, hiking permits are needed for some trails, and water is scarce, so carry plenty. On the West Coast, seafood is the highlight, with open-air restaurants on the beaches. Evenings can be cool, so pack layers. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
On safety, the Western Cape calls for the usual care:
Canada's advisory for South Africa, last updated on 28 Sep 2026, is to exercise a high degree of caution, citing serious crime, while the US has South Africa at Level 2 in an advisory issued 27 May 2025. Stargazing in the Cederberg is excellent on clear nights, as the area is far from city lights. Bring a warm jacket and sit out after dinner to watch the sky.
