Istanbul to Belize: San Ignacio and Caye Caulker
Istanbul → San Ignacio → Caye Caulker
Maya jungle & barrier reef Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr
Belize packs Maya ruins, jungle and the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere into a small country where English is the official language. This route spends three nights inland and four on Caye Caulker. From Istanbul you'll connect through a US hub to Belize City.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in San Ignacio: day one, drive west to San Ignacio; day two, Xunantunich ruins; day three, ATM cave tour. Then spend days four to seven in Caye Caulker: day four, back to Belize City, then water taxi to Caye Caulker; day five, Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley snorkel; day six, Blue Hole trip or a lazy day; day seven, kayak and the Split.
San Ignacio, in the west, is a small town in the hills near the Guatemalan border. Xunantunich, a Maya city across the river, has a tall temple with carved friezes. Actun Tunichil Muknal, a cave with Maya artefacts and skeletons, can only be visited with a licensed guide.
The drive back east and a water taxi take you to Caye Caulker, a small island with sandy streets and no cars. Life here moves at an unhurried pace.
The Belize Barrier Reef is listed by UNESCO. Longer trips go to the Great Blue Hole.
In San Ignacio, the market on Saturday mornings sells fruit, vegetables and local food. On Caye Caulker, the Split, a channel at the northern end of the village, is a popular place to swim and watch the sunset.
Practical notes: From Caye Caulker, boats go to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, where you can snorkel with nurse sharks and rays. The best time to go is the drier season, December to April. Hurricanes are most likely between June and November.
Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Belize because of high levels of violent crime throughout the country, and advises avoiding non-essential travel to Southside Belize City, south of Haulover Creek, because of gang and drug-related violence (updated 15 Jun 2026). This route only passes through Belize City; don't stay or walk south of Haulover Creek.
Carry small US or Belize dollar notes, which are both widely used.
