Sri Lanka is small enough to cross in a day, yet varied enough for two weeks. This loop from Jakarta lands in Colombo and then travels by road and rail: north to the ancient cultural heartland, up into the tea hills, and down to the south coast, so each stage feels different from the last.

After one night in Colombo, the drive to Sigiriya goes to the dry zone, where the fortress-palace on its rock can be climbed early in the morning, and the cave temples at Dambulla are nearby. Kandy, around the lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is the next stop and the starting point for the train to Ella, one of the best-known railway journeys in Asia, winding past tea estates and over high bridges. Ella itself is a hiking village with short trails to Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge. The road then drops to the coast at Mirissa, where whale-watching boats head out from the harbour in season.

December to April lines up with Mirissa's whale-watching season, which runs from about November to April. From around May the southwest monsoon brings rougher seas to the south coast, and most whale-watching boats there stop running. Conditions inland differ from the coast, so check the forecast for the hill country before you go. The train between Kandy and Ella is popular, so reserve seats ahead.

The order of the loop matters: doing the Cultural Triangle first gets the hot, dry climbing done early, the hills give you some cooler days in the middle, and the beach comes last. Hiring a car with a driver is common in Sri Lanka and makes the inland legs easier, while the Kandy to Ella stretch is best taken by train for the views.
