Safety note: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to the United Arab Emirates due to the volatile regional security situation (updated 10 Aug 2026). The US rates the UAE Level 3 (reconsider travel), citing missile and drone attacks from Iran in 2026 and flight disruptions (issued 29 Aug 2026).

Check both, and your airline, before booking.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are only a short drive apart, but they feel different. This route spends four nights in Dubai and three in the capital. From Jakarta it is a long flight west, sometimes with a connection.

In Dubai, start in the old part of town by the creek. Wooden abra boats cross the water to the spice and gold souks, and the Al Fahidi historical neighbourhood keeps its wind towers and narrow lanes. Downtown, the Burj Khalifa and the fountains show the modern city. A desert trip in a 4x4 or on foot gives a sense of the dunes beyond the city.

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open to visitors who follow its dress code. On Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits under a huge, perforated dome. The mangroves on the city's east side can be explored by kayak.

November to March is the most comfortable time to visit. Summer heat is extreme, so plan outdoor visits for early morning or evening.

Pacing: book the Burj Khalifa observation deck and the Louvre Abu Dhabi ahead for a set time. Taxis and the Dubai Metro make getting around easy, and the drive between the cities is straightforward. Reserve a time slot for the Grand Mosque before you go. Its rules ask women to wear a headscarf and loose clothes reaching the wrists and ankles, and men to wear long trousers rather than shorts, with no sleeveless tops.

Dubai's old quarter is best on foot in the late afternoon, when the creek is busy with boats and the souks are open. In Abu Dhabi, the mosque is especially beautiful at sunset, when its white marble changes colour.
