Moai & a remote Pacific island Best season (general guide): Year-round (warmest Dec–Mar)

Easter Island, Rapa Nui, is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, far out in the Pacific. This route spends one night in Santiago and five on the island. From Jakarta you'll connect via a hub to Santiago, then fly to Rapa Nui.

The island is famous for the moai, giant stone figures carved by the Rapa Nui people. UNESCO lists Rapa Nui National Park.

Ahu Tongariki has fifteen moai standing in a row. Rano Raraku, the quarry where the statues were carved, still has many lying on its slopes.

Orongo, a ceremonial village on the edge of a crater, was the site of the birdman ritual.

Anakena is a white sand beach with moai behind it. The Tapati festival celebrates Rapa Nui culture each year.

The island can be visited all year.

Good to know: A park ticket is needed, and some sites require a licensed guide. Don't touch the moai.

Santiago is a good place to rest for a night after the long flight. On Rapa Nui, the main village, Hanga Roa, has guesthouses, restaurants and a small museum. Sunrise at Ahu Tongariki is a highlight, so plan an early start. Some sites can only be visited once with your park ticket, so plan your route. Hiring a car, scooter or bicycle makes it easy to explore. Rano Kau, a volcanic crater with a lake, lies next to Orongo. Seafood and tuna dishes are common on menus. The island's culture is Polynesian, and the Rapa Nui language is spoken alongside Spanish. Bring sun protection, as there is little shade. Flights are limited, so book well ahead.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Chile (advisory updated 8 Oct 2026). The US rates Chile Level 2 (issued 19 Aug 2026).
