Sea otters, cliffs & redwoods Best season (general guide): Sep–Oct, Apr–May

The central coast of California has cliffs, beaches and redwoods. This route spends three nights in Monterey and three in Big Sur. From Jakarta you'll connect via San Francisco or Los Angeles to Monterey. Monterey Bay is home to sea otters and seals. Cannery Row, once lined with sardine canneries, is now a waterfront street.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium shows the life of the bay, including a kelp forest. Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small town, and the 17-Mile Drive loops along the coast. Point Lobos, south of Carmel, is a reserve of coves and cypress trees. Big Sur is a stretch of coast where Highway 1 runs along cliffs. The Bixby Creek Bridge is one of its landmarks, and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has redwoods.

Autumn is often the clearest season; summer can bring fog.

Good to know: Highway 1 sometimes closes after landslides, so check road status. Fill up with fuel before Big Sur.

Monterey's small airport has connections from major hubs, and rental cars are available on arrival. A car is essential for this route. In Big Sur, services are sparse, with few petrol stations and limited mobile coverage, so plan ahead. Accommodation in Big Sur is limited and books up far in advance, especially at weekends. Some trails close after storms or fires, so check park notices. Point Lobos limits the number of cars, so arrive early. Layers are useful, as mornings can be foggy and cool even when afternoons are warm.

Clam chowder is a local favourite. Sea otters are often seen near the shore in Monterey, especially around the harbour and kelp beds. Bring binoculars for a closer look. Download maps offline before driving south.
