Mountain lake & Tian Shan valleys Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country in Central Asia, where nomadic traditions are still alive. This route spends seven nights in Bishkek, at Issyk-Kul and in Karakol. From Johannesburg you'll connect through Istanbul or the Gulf.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Bishkek: day one, Ala-Too Square; day two, Ala Archa National Park. Then spend days three and four in Issyk-Kul (Cholpon-Ata): day three, travel east to Issyk-Kul; day four, petroglyphs and the lake. Then spend days five to seven in Karakol: day five, travel to Karakol, then the mosque and cathedral; day six, Jeti-Ögüz red rocks; day seven, mountain hike.

Bishkek has wide avenues and Soviet-era squares. Ala Archa National Park, a short drive south, has trails into the mountains.

Issyk-Kul is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, and it does not freeze in winter. At Cholpon-Ata, an open-air site has petroglyphs carved on boulders.

Karakol, at the eastern end of the lake, has a Dungan Mosque built of wood without nails and a wooden Orthodox cathedral. Nearby, Jeti-Ögüz has red rock formations, and trails lead into the Tian Shan.

June to September is the best season.

Kyrgyz hospitality is warm, and yurt stays are possible in the mountains near Karakol. Local food includes lagman, hand-pulled noodles, and plov. Bishkek's Osh Bazaar is a good place to buy dried fruit and nuts. Karakol's Sunday animal market shows rural life. Along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, small villages and beaches are quieter than the north. Trails from Karakol lead to alpine valleys, hot springs and glacier lakes, and local agencies can arrange guides and horses for longer trips.

Good to know: Shared taxis and minibuses link the towns, or hire a driver. Bring cash, as cards are not widely accepted outside Bishkek. Mountain weather changes quickly.

Learning a few words of Russian or Kyrgyz helps, as English is not widely spoken. Bring sun protection, as the mountain sun is strong.

Carry your passport, as police checks are common on the roads. Plan extra time for long drives on mountain roads, and book yurt stays through local agencies or guesthouses.
