A tropical city & an island of koalas and bays Best season (general guide): May–Oct

North Queensland's dry tropics are less rainy than the coast further north, with a lively city and a granite island just offshore. This route spends three nights in Townsville and three on Magnetic Island. From Johannesburg you'll connect through Sydney or Brisbane to Townsville, the largest city in northern Australia, with about 200,000 people.

How to pace it: arrive and walk The Strand, a long beachfront with parks and a rock pool. On day two, visit Reef HQ, a large aquarium that recreates a living coral reef, a good introduction since Townsville is a gateway to the central Great Barrier Reef. Divers can also reach the wreck of the SS Yongala, lost in a cyclone in 1911 about 90 kilometres south-east of the city. On day three, walk up Castle Hill, the pink granite monolith above the centre, for sunset.

On day four, take the ferry from Townsville's breakwater to Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island, about eight kilometres offshore and called Yunbenun in the Wulguru language. Captain James Cook named it in 1770, believing it affected his ship's compass. Much of the 52-square-kilometre island is national park and bird sanctuary, and the forts walk to Second World War forts, on day five, is one of the best places to see wild koalas. Keep day six for the snorkel trail and the bays.

Practical notes: the dry season, from May to October, is the most comfortable. The island has effectively become a suburb of Townsville, so ferries are frequent and you won't need to plan far ahead.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Australia to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Australia Level 1 (18 Aug 2026).
