Hanseatic port & Teutonic castle Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Gdańsk, on Poland's Baltic coast, was a wealthy Hanseatic port and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement. This route spends six nights between Gdańsk, the castle of Malbork and the resort of Sopot. From Kuala Lumpur you'll connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or a European hub.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Gdańsk: day one, the Long Market; day two, European Solidarity Centre; day three, Westerplatte and the WWII Museum. Then spend day four in Malbork: train to Malbork, then the castle. Then spend days five and six in Sopot: day five, train to Sopot, then the pier; day six, beach and the Tricity coast.

Gdańsk's Long Market, Długi Targ, is lined with tall, decorated merchants' houses rebuilt after the Second World War. Amber, the fossil resin washed up on Baltic shores, is sold in shops along nearby Mariacka Street.

The European Solidarity Centre, near the shipyard where the Solidarity trade union was founded, tells the story of the movement that helped end communist rule. At Westerplatte, the Second World War began on 1 September 1939, and the Museum of the Second World War in the city covers the war in depth.

Malbork, an hour away by train, is home to the castle of the Teutonic Order, a huge red-brick fortress on the river. It is often described as the largest castle in the world by land area, and UNESCO lists it.

Sopot, between Gdańsk and Gdynia, is a seaside resort with a long wooden pier stretching into the Baltic, and beaches of fine sand.

May to September is the warmest season and the best time.

Gdańsk's main street fills up with visitors at midday in summer, so explore early in the day and save the museums for the afternoon.

Good to know: Local trains link Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, and regular trains run to Malbork. Allow at least half a day for the castle, and book an audio guide. Try pierogi and Baltic fish in the old town.
