Sea lions & a desert oasis Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr

South of Lima, Peru's coast is desert, with wildlife islands off Paracas and tall dunes around the oasis of Huacachina. This route spends three nights in each. From Kuala Lumpur you'll connect to Lima, then drive south.

How to pace it: arrive in Lima and drive to Paracas, a long first day. On day two, take the morning boat trip to the Ballestas Islands, home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins and seabirds; the islands are covered with guano, once a major Peruvian industry, and the boats pass the Paracas Candelabra, a figure about 170 metres tall on the hillside that is best seen from the sea. Spend day three in the Paracas National Reservation, which protects desert coast and marine life. The Paracas culture, which flourished around 800 BC to 100 AD and was named after the peninsula, is known for its fine textiles.

On day four, drive to Huacachina, a small oasis about five kilometres from Ica, surrounded by tall dunes; it has around 100 permanent residents and has appeared on the 50-sol note since 1991. Dune buggies and sandboarding fill day five. On day six, visit the vineyards around Ica, Peru's main wine and pisco region, and the Regional Museum of Ica, which displays Paracas textiles and mummies. The Nazca Lines, listed by UNESCO in 1994, lie further south if you want to add a day.

Practical notes: December to April is the warm season. On the coast, try ceviche, raw fish marinated in lime, which is considered Peru's national dish.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Peru, with regional advisories for areas away from this coast (updated 9 Oct 2026), and the US rates Peru Level 2 (4 Sep 2026). Neither names this coast; choose licensed operators for buggy rides.
