Kuala Lumpur to south-east Sicily: Syracuse and Noto
Kuala Lumpur → Syracuse → Noto
An ancient rival of Athens & a baroque town Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct
Sicily's south-east corner holds a Greek city that once matched Athens and a string of towns rebuilt in baroque style after an earthquake. This route spends three nights in Syracuse and three in Noto. From Kuala Lumpur you'll connect to Catania, then take the bus south. Syracuse, on the south-east coast of Sicily, was one of the largest cities of the classical world and rivalled Athens in power. Athens tried and failed to conquer it.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Syracuse: day one, bus from Catania; day two, Ortigia island; day three, Neapolis archaeological park. Then spend days four to six in Noto: day four, bus to Noto, then the main street; day five, cathedral and the palaces; day six, Vendicari reserve.
UNESCO lists the city together with the rock-cut tombs of Pantalica, inland. Ortigia, the island at the heart of the old city, is joined to the mainland by bridges and is full of baroque churches and lanes leading to the sea. In the Neapolis park, the Greek theatre is still used for classical plays each year.
The Ear of Dionysius, a cave in an old quarry, is famous for its echo. Archimedes, the mathematician and inventor, was born and died in Syracuse. Noto lies 32 kilometres south-west of Syracuse at the foot of the Hyblaean Mountains, and gives its name to the Val di Noto. The old town was destroyed in the earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt on a new site in baroque style, using golden limestone.
On the coast nearby, the Vendicari reserve protects lagoons where flamingos can be seen. Spring and autumn are warm, and summer is hot and dry. Syracuse has about 115,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city in Sicily, after Palermo, Catania and Messina.
Granita and cannoli are classics of Sicilian cafés.
Safety: Canada's advice for Italy is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 29 Sep 2026), and the US rates Italy Level 2 (10 Sep 2026).
