On the border of Arizona and Utah, the Colorado Plateau holds some of the most famous landscapes of the American West. This route spends three nights in Page and three in Monument Valley. From Lagos you'll connect through a US hub to Page or Phoenix, then drive. Page is a city in Coconino County, near the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, with about 7,400 people.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Page: day one, Glen Canyon Dam; day two, Antelope Canyon tour; day three, Horseshoe Bend. Then spend days four to six in Monument Valley: day four, road to Monument Valley; day five, valley drive with a Navajo guide; day six, sunrise over the buttes.

Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, formed by the dam, and one of the largest in the United States. Antelope Canyon, on Navajo land near the town, is a slot canyon of curving sandstone walls lit by shafts of sunlight. It can only be visited with a Navajo guide. Horseshoe Bend is a curve of the Colorado River seen from a cliff top just south of Page.

Rainbow Bridge, one of the largest natural bridges in the world, is reached by boat on the lake. Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau with a cluster of sandstone buttes, the largest rising about 300 metres above the valley floor. The valley lies within the Navajo Nation's reservation and is considered sacred by the Navajo.

The Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park has a scenic drive, and guided tours go deeper into the valley. The director John Ford filmed many westerns there, and the valley has appeared in many films since. Spring and autumn avoid the hottest weeks. Page was founded in 1957 as a camp for the workers building the Glen Canyon Dam.

Monument Valley's Navajo name means valley of the rocks. The most famous buttes are in north-eastern Arizona, along the Utah–Arizona line. The Navajo Nation observes daylight saving time while the rest of Arizona does not, so clocks can differ.
