Cocoa plantations, rainforest & quiet beaches Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

São Tomé and Príncipe, two volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea, is one of Africa's smallest and quietest countries. This route spends three nights on São Tomé and three on Príncipe. From Lisbon there are flights to São Tomé.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in São Tomé: day one, arrive and settle in; day two, plantation roças and cocoa; day three, travel south to Pico Cão Grande. Then spend days four to six in Príncipe: day four, fly to Príncipe; day five, forest walk; day six, beaches.

The islands were a Portuguese colony and were once among the world's main cocoa producers. Old plantation estates, called roças, still stand across the islands, some restored as guesthouses.

In the south of São Tomé, Pico Cão Grande is a needle of volcanic rock rising above the rainforest of Obô Natural Park.

The capital, São Tomé, has colonial buildings and a relaxed waterfront.

Príncipe, a short flight away, is smaller and wilder. UNESCO lists the island as a biosphere reserve, and forest reaches down to quiet beaches.

June to September is the drier season, the gravana.

Good to know: Life is slow, and flights to Príncipe are limited, so allow flexibility. Bring cash in euros.

São Tomé's capital has a market, a fort and old colonial houses along the bay. Roça Agostinho Neto and other estates show how cocoa was grown and processed. Chocolate made on the island is sold in the capital. The south of the island has wild beaches and forest roads, best explored with a driver. Príncipe has only a few places to stay, so book well in advance. Turtles nest on some beaches in season, and local projects run guided night walks. Mobile signal and card payments are limited, so carry cash and download maps. Portuguese is the official language, and a few words help. Bring rain gear even in the dry season, as forest showers are frequent.

Canada advises normal security precautions in São Tomé and Príncipe (advisory updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates it Level 2 (issued 4 Sep 2026).
